Project Title: Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
Status: 67% complete
Start Date: May 2006
Completion: ?
Prototype: These models are based on the ballast wagons rebuilt from coal hoppers in the period 1987-1991. Three designs were produced. The ZCV 'Tope' involved simply cutting down the height of the original hopper bodywork and sealing the bottom doors. 816 of these were converted. Less numerous were the ZBA 'Rudd' (800) and ZCV 'Clam' (450), both of which received new box bodywork. The Clam was a basic box design with heavy vertical ribs, while the Rudd featured drop-side doors and also involved the replacment of the original vacuum brake gear with air brakes. The vast majority of all three types was painted in the Civil Engineers livery of grey with a yellow band at the top. Alterations to this were mainly as a result of patch painting after repairs, while most of the wagons acquired a heavily rusted appearance from their arduous duties. Having been used across most of the country, all three types were gradually withdrawn in the late 1990s, only the air-braked Rudds lasting in some numbers into the 2000s.
Models: The Clam and Tope were among the first wagons that I built, although they were very basic models and were never released. In early 2006 I started work on upgrading these, adding many of the features introduced since the Trainz UTC days. A ZBA Rudd was also built and this was the first to be released. Although featuring industry-compatability and Couplestar, Chameleon was not used until the release of the ZCV Clam. The ZCV Tope remains in the workshops waiting for some finishing touches.

Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
Two ballast wagon rebuilds (cut down Tope and box bodied Clam) had been built in my early days of Trainz activity, and these were tested in TRS2006 before starting on upgrading. As can be seen, they had fixed couplings and little texturing on the underframes. They also lacked LOD and industry compatability.

The first model to be upgraded was the ZCV Tope cut-down hopper.

Next in line was the ZCV Clam box rebody, which was also modified to represent the ZBA Rudd dropside box rebody. This view shows all three types, together with the HTV hopper from which they were derived.

Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
Although it was the last to be started, the ZBA Rudd was selected for further work because the air brake pipes required for it were already available from Eldavo, while the vacuum pipes for the other two were not. As this picture shows, the couplestar couplings and hoses have been added, together with a load with simple animation. What I forgot to do was add a line to turn off the particle effects once loading was complete, resulting in this interesting 'steaming cargo' effect!

Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
The ZBA Rudd was released today, but I soon realised I had forgotten to incorporate the Chameleon feature. My first use of this was therefore to be on the ZCV Clam box wagon rebody, and during testing some colourful skins were used to check the functionality. I also created a pair of vacuum brake pipes (coupled and hanging) and referenced these.

With the Chameleon functionality added, I then created the four textures to be used. As can be seen, these were all variants on the yellow/grey civil engineers livery, with differences in the lettering as well as some light weathering. Note also that the couplestar tail lamp was included and appears on the wagon at the rear of a train. This model was released a couple of days later.
The ZCV Tope was put on hold awaiting the completion of the more complex load animations required by the hopper shape.

Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
The Tope wagon has been taken out and dusted down, seen here with a clean livery for testing purposes. Besides redoing the load animation, I also took the opportunity to model the hopper without chutes, and to add the spill plates to the end. Just need to add a LOD mesh and sort out the couplings and texture switching.

Ballast Wagon Rebuilds
The Tope wagon has been delayed while I do some experiments with photo textures. I have never used this technique for anything larger than a bogie and, as will be seen, I still need to do some work on the colours and matching other parts. The model was not made with this method in mind so I may need to redo the texture mapping.
Key

Features: Industry compatible Level of Detail reduction meshes
Chameleon (or equivalent) texture switching Couplestar (or equivalent) working couplings
Animated parts (other than wheels and loads)

Star ratings: These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model.
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture 4 stars. Almost perfect
2 stars. Adequate 5 stars. Unimprovable!
3 stars. Good Not rated. Applies to my own models!

Trainz versions: These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement.
