A scan of a die-cast model was used for the main textures and the hardest part proved to be making an acceptable looking driver figure (which was not really achieved!). Further releases were planned, starting with a Bristol VRT, and it was intended that these would be made easy to reskin, so that community could produce a variety of liveries. As it turned out, the project was overtaken by more work on wagons, but I was to return to road vehicles at the end of 2006. My cartic wagons needed some vehicles to carry, so I tried my hand at making some cars, followed by a van and lorry. To make the most of my work, these were all released as stand-alone scenery items as well. Back to buses in 2007, an Olympian was produced in response to a request. Inspired by some of the work seen on the UKtrainz forum, I decided to make this drivable and also industry compatible. I figured that three versions of each model were really needed; a static one with no passengers, a traffic one with 'spun' wheels and some interior figures, and the full drivable one. The amount of work needed to produce a decent interior was slightly off-putting and I put the project to one side for now. The first releases were eventually made in November that year, and further liveries have followed at intervals since. double door 10m Alexander RH bus Updates 14/05/2006 Road vehicles Two test vehicles, either of which may one day be completed and released. The textures of both are made up from scans of die-cast models, wrapped wround very basic meshes. 27/05/2006 Road Vehicles The London Transport DMS bus was also based on scans of a die-cast model and despite some problems (most notably the square-headed driver!), has become my best "selling" item on the DLS. 25/08/2006 Road Vehicles The second bus model was to be a Bristol VRT, but the curvaceous nature of the design means getting the mesh right takes a lot longer. 30/09/2006 Road Vehicles One of the aims of this project is to make models that are as easy as possible to reskin. This is to be achieved by providing a copy of the texture file in PSP format, with the bodywork and fittings (eg windows, grilles) on separate layers. There will also be two selection files so that parts of the texture can be lightened or darkened to represent the panel lines. This Stagecoach VRT was produced very quickly using this technique. Still not quite happy with the mesh though! 28/01/2007 Road Vehicles For my PJA Cartic wagon models, I decided to build my own cars and vans to act as products to be loaded. Scenic variants of each model were also produced. Work started during the Christmas holiday and, by the end of January, three basic models were ready for release. The 2005 Ford Fiesta was my first attempt at modelling something 'curvy' and was not brilliant! The more angular 1987 Ford Escort Estate model was much more successful. Since the Cartic wagons used opacity for the mesh screens, these cars had to have opaque windows, filled with the 'steamed-up' effect seen on Auran's default cars. The Ford Transit van did have opacity, on the front at least, and the windscreen included a tinted visor strip. Each model was released in a variety of colours. 18/02/2007 Road Vehicles It was suggested that I produce a lorry chassis for loading on the single deck cartic wagon, so I built an IVECO EuroCargo. This was a quite detailed model so LOD was employed to reduce the impact. LOD was also featured on the scenery version, which was produced in four colour schemes. It was intended that seperate bodies could be made for use with these. The model can only be used in static mode (ie not as traffic) since it has no driver. 25/02/2007 Road Vehicles The IVECO trucks were relased today, along with the Bristol VRT bus. Although I was not yet happy with the latter model, a test release to the UKtrainz forum has been used in a layout uploaded to the DLS. It is still planned to improve the mesh at a later date. 03/04/2007 Road Vehicles A couple of requests were received for variants of the Ford Transit van, the first being for a Network Rail crew van. This was modified to represent the long-wheelbase, high-roof version of the van, and additional windows were added along with interior seats and tables. Two models were released; plain white (as seen here), and white and blue. The second request was for a left-hand-drive van for reskinning purposes. 28/04/2007 Road Vehicles A third request was for a model of a double-deck Megabus coach, as used by Stagecoach on inter-city services in the UK. I eventually acquired a die-cast model of such a vehicle, since producing the livery would have been difficult otherwise. The first model included a full interior and tinted windows. However, this was not released yet as it was intended to develop a drivable version to accompany it. 29/04/2007 Road Vehicles Yet another request from the UKtrainz forum was for a model of a car-carrying lorry, and I realised that this could be built into the TYind plan, acting as the last link in the chain between industries involved in the manufacture of cars. With perhaps too many projects on the go, I only got as far as producing the model shown here in gmax (with car models temporarily added). The work required to make this drivable put it behind the Megabus on my 'schedule'! 15/05/2007 Road Vehicles While I struggled to get the drivable megabus working, the mesh was modified to represent the 2-axle Olympian that was far more common as a bus in the UK. The first livery produced for this was Arriva. Once again, the release was put on hold until the variants could be produced. 21/09/2007 Road Vehicles Having got the bogies and steering on the Megabus working, I turned to the passengers. By a process of trial and error I worked out that the attachment point for a seated passenger is roughly at their feet. A total of 84 points were added but, as this image shows, some adjustment was needed to stop them poking through the bodyshell. 22/09/2007 Road Vehicles The 2-axle version of the bus was made drivable and chameleon was added to allow switching between geographically-grouped liveries. I also refined the scenery versions and added some more liveries to these. 16/10/2007 Road Vehicles A major setback was the discovery that I had made the body of the Alexander RH body about 0.4m too short. A revised mesh was produced and the opportunity was taken to tidy up the texture mapping. 22/10/2007 Road Vehicles The taller model was carried over to the drivable version and an interior model was added. Note that there is still a little 'foot intrusion' from some of the passenger meshes, but these could hardly be moved any further inboard. The shadows for the bogies were yet to be added. The passengers sitting next to the rear door were later removed from the dual door versions. 28/10/2007 Road Vehicles The first livery to be fully completed was Arriva national. This view shows the three variants of model, drivable at the rear, traffic in the centre and static at the front. There will be differences in blinds and adverts to add variety. The differences between the two scenic versions are that the traffic version has a driver figure and altered wheel textures to make the lack of rotation (when used in traffic) less apparent. The plan to make the destination blinds settable using the object name were shelved as the results did not look very realistic. 29/10/2007 Road Vehicles The final hurdle concerned whether passengers appear in the interior views. An interior model was created but this always appeared passenger-less. Following some advice I added some outsideview attachments to the main model and the results are as shown. Although the passengers do appear, the inside of the main model is less detailed than the interior model, and there were also some curious effects where the sun and other light sources were visible through the solid parts of the bus. Because of this, I reverted to the passenger-less version. At a late stage the plan to use Chameleon to switch liveries was also dropped due to it causing difficulties with assigning drivers. 06/11/2007 Road Vehicles A total of 37 liveries was produced (to start with!) and the first 20 (totalling 60 models) were uploaded to the DLS in the first week of November. Work on the remainder (adding adverts and blinds) was delayed by the arrival of my firstborn. 11/06/2008 Road Vehicles The second set of 17 liveries was completed today (seen here during testing), packaged up and submitted to the DLS. 18/06/2008 Road Vehicles The latest batch is now available on the DLS. Someone on the UKTrainz forum asked if I could do the other Busways liveries. As a fan of this company, I was happy to oblige, and I also added the distinctive front bumpers fitted to this fleet. The three Sunderland models are seen here during testing. 25/06/2008 Road Vehicles More requests asked for buses in the liveries of Cardiff (completed and uploaded with the Busways models on 23rd June) and Oxford. The latter are seen as work in progress. One problem with the Park and Ride livery was that the red stripes took on a pinkish hue when seen against the blue background. 21/10/2008 Road Vehicles I was reminded recently of my promise to complete the Oxford buses so I gave them a bit of attention tonight. The colours on the park and ride example were tweaked to reduce the pinkness of the stripes, and logos and blinds were added to both. There had also been a request for a Wilts and Dorset example, which I initially turned down as they never ran Alexander RH buses. However, I knocked this up tonight to see how quickly the reskinning process could be done. Although more work is required (for example the blinds and adverts, then the icons and packaging), this took 25 minutes from start to in-game. Update: These models were released on 25th October 29/11/2008 Road Vehicles I am continuing to dig out old projects with a view to reducing my back-log. The latest model to receive attention is the car carrier lorry, last seen almost 2 years ago. The bodywork was extended to carry five cars and work on the textures and mapping has started. 28/08/2009 Road Vehicles Following a request, the Dennis Dart in Stagecoach livery was submitted to the DLS today. This is an interim model, a more detailed version is planned for later. The only changes made were to modify the opacity maps to work correctly in TC3 and TS2009.
