Project Title: BAA Steel Wagon and variants
Status: Initial model released
Start Date: Jan 2006
Completion: Ongoing
Prototype: See profile on this site.
Models: The BAA model was started shortly after the BBA in early 2006 but was then put on hold. The BBA did not have industry-compatability, chameleon textures or working couplings and I wanted to learn all of these before releasing what was essentially a very similar design.
Following the completion of some other projects, I returned to the BAA and put in all the 'bells and whistles'. A side effect of this was that, while the BBA release had comprised 12 separate models of the basic design, the BAA achieved similar variety with just one release. Plans to produce coil carrying variants such as the BCA are long-term.

BAA + variants
The original BAA model had bogies with the detail represented by the mesh rather than the texture. It also lacked industry compatability and came in loaded and empty variants. This was never released, but seen here being shunted on my test layout.

BAA + variants
With the PTA project complete, I returned to the BAA wagon. After tidying up the mesh and referencing the new bogies, the next task was to combine the originally separate texture maps. I used a plain green texture to check the model over before starting on the new textures. Shame that none of the freight companies have adopted this livery! Other tasks included adding the load attachments and modifying the config file.

BAA + variants
An almost complete wagon is seen on test. It was decided to use Chameleon to represent different liveries rather than just weathering conditions. On the black-based wagon the addition of the white edge safety markings to the deck really improved the appearance. Three products had been created including two sizes of steel coil (with binding straps) and some steel slabs.

BAA + variants
A line-up with a difference. All 20 wagons shown here are actually the same model. There are five Chameleon liveries, and four main configurations of load. The loads cannot be mixed but further permutations are possible by taking different quantities of coils or slabs. To the right can be seen some cradle-fitted BCA wagons, this being the next planned development.

BAA + variants
Milking the mesh! With a little free time during the summer holiday, I thought that doing some BAA variations may be a quick way of getting some new releases. However, research showed that there were no fewer than 6 different designs of end panels on these wagons, and in-numerable variations of style and position of coil cradles. This view shows the first 5 ends completed. Note that the rearmost two are from the batch with deeper solebars. Not every variant will be released but those that do will have specular lighting and well weathered finishes.
Key

Features: Industry compatible Level of Detail reduction meshes
Chameleon (or equivalent) texture switching Couplestar (or equivalent) working couplings
Animated parts (other than wheels and loads)

Star ratings: These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model.
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture 4 stars. Almost perfect
2 stars. Adequate 5 stars. Unimprovable!
3 stars. Good Not rated. Applies to my own models!

Trainz versions: These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement.
