Project Title: Bardon Aggregate Hoppers
Status: 80% released
Start Date: August 2006
Completion: Ongoing
Prototype: See profile on this site.
Models: A survey on the UKtrainz forum suggested that the Bardon bogie aggregate hopper would be a popular model, and I started work on this in August 2006. There were three versions of these wagons, each with a different bogie type. I decided to concentrate on the first two variants as these had broadly similar bodywork.
This project had more than its fair share of hiccups, and making the bogies further delayed progress. The first two designs were eventually released in June 2007, while work on the third batch was put on hold for a while.

Bardon Hoppers
This first test shot was posted on the UKtrainz forum for feedback. The wagon was mounted temporarily on the FBT6 bogies from the BBA wagon, and an opacity map had been used to create the cut-outs in the solebar. Conflicts with specular lighting meant these were later changed to derive from the alpha channel of the texture.

Bardon Hoppers
The green/yellow texture initially used looked rather ropey, so I switched to the later green/black version for further testing. This was my first model to use specular lighting and the picture here shows the effect. The furthest wagon does not have specular lighting. Also visible here are my first attempt at the cast Y25 bogies on which the second batch of wagons ran.

Bardon Hoppers
Oh dear! This view shows an early attempt to add a weathered finish to the Bardon hoppers. The nearest bogie was another botch, being the FBT6 from the BBA recoloured and passed off as a fabricated Y25. The cast Y25 at the back looks a bit better, but the yellow chassis of the wagon still needs improving.

Bardon Hoppers
Some very nice fabricated Y25 bogies were found on the DLS but I decided not to use these. In a moment of madness I decided to make my own, so that the correct colours could be more easily obtained. As this view shows, the models featured a lot of mesh detail with just the axlebox areas being textured. Note that the springs are 'opened up' using an opacity map. A strong LOD regime was applied to ease the strain.

Bardon Hoppers
With the large Cartic project completed, I turned my attention back to the Bardon hoppers. The bogies were completed and released in April, each needing four base colours for the various liveries planned. The wagons themselves had more detail added, and the yellow of the solebars was toned down to produce the almost acceptable appearance seen here. Note the different bogies, solebars and hopper doors on the second batch wagon in the background.

Bardon Hoppers
So, two designs of wagon, each with two main liveries, each with two main variants, each with four chameleon textures... crumbs! The second livery was cream/white-based, and this was an early attempt to produce a weathered version of this. The whole project was then stalled by a major problem with Chameleon, whereby the alternative textures only appeared on the highest LOD mesh. The result was that a dirty wagon got cleaner as it moved further away!

Bardon Hoppers
The LOD/Chameleon issue was eventually traced to the way in which the main mesh was exported while linked to the dummy for the hopper door animation. The final hurdle was then to get Chameleon working on the attachments (so that a dirty wagon did not have clean hopper doors) and this was achieved with help from Eldavo. This pre-launch line up shows all eight models and the 36 alternative textures. The models were released two days later.

Bardon Hoppers
Following a suggestion on the UKtrainz forum, I reskinned the Bardon hopper to represent the Freightliner Heavy Haul (ex RHR Roadstone) JGAs. These wagons are to a slightly different design and this model is intended to be replaced by a more accurate one at a later date.

Bardon Hoppers
Having undertaken a review of my ongoing projects, I decided to get some of the smaller ones out of the way, including the Freightliner reskin. The model, and a set of four alternate skins with moderate weathering, was completed and released this week.
Key

Features: Industry compatible Level of Detail reduction meshes
Chameleon (or equivalent) texture switching Couplestar (or equivalent) working couplings
Animated parts (other than wheels and loads)

Star ratings: These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model.
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture 4 stars. Almost perfect
2 stars. Adequate 5 stars. Unimprovable!
3 stars. Good Not rated. Applies to my own models!

Trainz versions: These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement.
