The British Steel Teesside PGA hopper was the first wagon model that I started building when I returned to Trainz in December 2005. This was before I had learned about industries, Chameleon, LODs or even poly reduction so the model was very basic. After moving on to do several other wagon projects, I eventually returned to the PGA some 18 months later, and applied all the extras that had been lacking. The load animation in particular was tricky and was made up of two sets of animated planes. The top half of the hopper had four planes that overlapped themselves as the load travelled downwards. When it reached the point at which the hopper divided into two chutes, this set was removed (or rather moved 'underground') and replaced by another set of 8 planes, again overlapping into each chute. The hopper doors were given a simple animation but no attempt was made to carry this through onto the complex operating gear mounted on the solebars.

PG010 Hoppers |
An early view of the PGA, while the running gear was still represented by modelled details. |

PG010 Hoppers |
The suspension units were simplified with the detail represented using a photo texture, and the red-top variety was added. A rake is seen here on a test run. |

PG010 Hoppers |
Work on the PGA was put off while other projects proceeded and I eventually returned to it in June 2007. The mesh was tidied up and more detail added, the load and hopper doors were added and animated, attachments for couplestar couplings and hoses were added, and a set of 6 chameleon textures was created to cover variations in liveries and conditions. The completed model was released at the end of the month. |

PG010 Hoppers |
The logical next step was to model the Railease hoppers that in reality were rebuilt from surplus BSTE PGAs. These featured cut down hoppers, revised bottom chutes and doors, and access ladders and platforms at each end. This view shows a rake in interim livery having the revised hopper doors tested. The actuators were animated to rotate as the doors opened, but they are perhaps a bit on the weedy side. |

PG010 Hoppers |
Not a progress update as such but I have made some interesting images by compositing wire-frame, edged face and textured views. This one shows the BSTE PGA hopper. |

| Star ratings: |
These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model. |
 |
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture |
 |
4 stars. Almost perfect |
 |
2 stars. Adequate |
 |
5 stars. Unimprovable! |
 |
3 stars. Good |
 |
Not rated. Applies to my own models! |
|
| Trainz versions: |
These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement. |
