The term 'On-Track Plant' covers a huge variety of items intended for track maintenance. Best known are the large, complex machines such as breakdown cranes, tampers and ballast cleaners. The majority of machines were built by the Austrian firm of Plasser and Theurer and most were painted yellow.
One of the smallest machines (apart from the tiny Wickham trolleys) was the Plasser TASC-45 track maintenance trolley. BR bought 7 of these in 1985, most of which were based in Scotland. |
| Models: |
Apart from a little Wickham Trolley, no UK-specific track machines were available in Trainz when this project was started. Various items have been seen as 'work in progress' but the only releases were of continental types that could nevertheless be used with a little artistic licence. Drawings were to hand for some of the larger and more modern machines but I decided to start with something a lot smaller and simpler. The TASC-45 was selected and work started on building a non-drivable version. Many of the parts could probably be re-used to build a larger GP-TRAMM trolley later on.

On-Track Plant |
It seems odd to start a new project when my Trainz-time is very limited but hopefully this will keep my interest going. Shown here is the beginnings of the TASC-45 model. All of the dimensions were estimated and the model is being built as a non-drivable item to start with. |

On-Track Plant |
A little bit further on with some of the small details added and textured, shown here with a gmax screendump for a change. Note that the windows are 'cut out' using an opacity map. This results in a slightly pixellated appearance and may be changed to mesh modelling later on, depending on how the poly count goes. |

On-Track Plant |
Progress on this model is slow due to a lack of spare time. Recent changes have been the addition and texturing of more parts, plus a start on the suspension units and underfloor components. |

| Star ratings: |
These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model. |
 |
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture |
 |
4 stars. Almost perfect |
 |
2 stars. Adequate |
 |
5 stars. Unimprovable! |
 |
3 stars. Good |
 |
Not rated. Applies to my own models! |
|
| Trainz versions: |
These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement. |
