Project Title: MRA Ballast Tippers
Status: Under construction
Start Date: 17th October 2008
Completion: Ongoing
Prototype: The MRA was one of several 'new-generation' departmental wagon designs that appeared in the 1990s and 2000s. Based on a prototype built by Thrall in 2000, the fleet of 400 MRA wagons was constructed in Romania. Each wagon had two boxes that could be tipped to either side, unloading ballast onto adjacent track-beds. The wagons were formed into close-coupled 5-wagon sets, and one wagon in each set carried a generator. For more information, see the profile on LTSV wagons.
Models: I had made a basic model of a side-tipping wagon when a colleague was making a PTA wagon, the aim being to test how the tipping action could be replicated.

MRA Ballast Tipper
Although I have only just started on the MRA project I do have a bit of a head-start, having done some tests of a side-tipping wagon in connection with a PTA model being built by Tramp. The wagons were made to tip to the relevant side by hiding parts of the mesh during unloading. This represents some compromises in that the boxes cannot tip one at a time, and getting the load texture to carry through to all three load meshes proved troublesome.
Key

Features: Industry compatible Level of Detail reduction meshes
Chameleon (or equivalent) texture switching Couplestar (or equivalent) working couplings
Animated parts (other than wheels and loads)

Star ratings: These are my own personal appraisals of each model, based on the quality of the mesh and texture, the features, and the realism/accuracy of the complete model.
1 star. Poor. Inaccurate mesh and/or texture 4 stars. Almost perfect
2 stars. Adequate 5 stars. Unimprovable!
3 stars. Good Not rated. Applies to my own models!

Trainz versions: These indicate the lowest version of Trainz that an item will work with. For example, an item with version number 2.0 will work in any version of Trainz from 2004 onwards. Note that the version numbers are taken from the config file of the main item. The version numbers for dependencies may be different, resulting in the item having a higher requirement.
