Title:Modern Railways in Profile series (3 books) Review image
Author:Tom Smith
Publisher:Cheona Publications, Llanllyfni
Format:Book
Subject:Wagons
Category:Photos
Spec:64 pages, 9in x 7in, card covers, full-colour
Publication date:2002-2004
Summary:Slim volumes but with lots of large photos, all in colour. Certain wagon types do not feature but others are covered in-depth.
Review:These books followed on from the earlier Railways in Profile series and were to a similar format but printed in full colour. As on the real railway, the distinction between railway-owned and private wagons was no longer relevant and the three titles published to date are grouped instead by types. The photos and reproduction are excellent, my only gripe being about the range of subjects covered, this appearing to be skewed in favour of certain types. For example, Volume 2 covered 'Steel Carriers, Engineers Stock, Timber Carriers & Powder Tanks' and featured 14 photos of OTA timber wagons but none of the various types of JSA steel wagons.

Page image Most pages have just two photos, often showing variations of a basic type
Page image A varied selection of types is the subject of book 2, published in 2003
Page image All photos are in colour and the reproduction is excellent
Page image 2004 saw a third volume, covering most types of tank wagon
Page image This book seems to contain a lot of photos of filthy wagons! These two aren't too bad
