Summary:This well-written book looks at all facets of 'modern' Railfreight, from TOPS and wagon design to the haulage, routing and cargoes carried by the trains.
Review:This book provides an overview of the freight scene in the UK in the mid-1980s and deals with the politics and economics of railfreight as well as detailing the services operated. Each chapter considers a particular commidity and there are also sections on TOPS (including a list of codes) and the private wagon industry. Photos are a mixture of views of trains and portraits of individual wagons. Two rare types included are the VHA curtain-side van and the 6-wheel bogied FHA. The maps of freight terminals provide an interesting comparison to those in more recent Freightmaster books, while there are also drawings of several planned wagon types, some of which were never actually built.
