Summary:Platform 5's take on the 'every one' locomotive listings was their 'Register', first published in 1984 and containing a wealth of information. After a lengthy gap, the series was updated in 2018.
Review:Various publishers have produced books aiming to list every diesel and electric locomotive to have operated on BR. Platform 5 published their first in 1984, updated with new editions in 1987 and 1994 and then again in 2018. This review is based on the third (1994) edition.

Page image The front cover. The seven colour photos on (and inside) the covers are the only illustrations in the book.
Page image The main listing starts with pre-Nationalisation diesels. For each, the number, withdrawal date, brake and train heating at time of withdrawal, disposal and date are given.
Page image The bulk of the book lists the BR types, organised by their 1957 numbers. This means that types such as the class 25s are split across several pages. Names (with dates on and off) are listed at the end of each batch. The box at the right of each line is presumably for users' own notes.
Page image Three columns are provided to show renumbering information. Locos that had more than three numbers have asterisks shown instead of the intermediate numbers and you need to refer to an appendix to see the full history.
Page image After the main listings there is a reference table showing locos that carried more than three numbers. Note the condensed font used to squeeze departmental numbers into the space available.
Page image The last table runs to 8 pages and acts as an index by providing a cross reference between TOPS numbers and 1957 numbers. It should be noted that only the latest/last TOPS number is shown. For example, refurbished 37s only appear under their new numbers. In my opinion it would have been better if all TOPS numbers had been included.
