Title:British Rail Coaching Stock (2 books) Review image
Author:Ashley Butlin
Publisher:Coorlea Publishing
Format:Book
Subject:Coaches
Category:Numbers - All
Spec:A4, 36-92 pages, card covers
Publication date:1998-2013
Summary:Comprehensive details of the 'final destination' for every item of BR coaching stock are the subject matter of these well-researched books.
Review:Ashley Butlin has long been the expert on rolling stock disposals and he has written several books on the subject. This series, published by Coorlea, looks at the BR coaching stock fleet. Each batch is listed in numerical order, showing for each number either the current user or the withdrawal date and disposal. The latter includes the company and location, while the current location of preserved stock is also shown. Renumberings are covered, so that you can trace an individual vehicle's history, though dates for these are not included. The first volume (not yet reviewed) covered Mk2, 3 & 4 coaches, while the second dealt with Mk1s. A volume 3 to look at non-passenger carrying coaches was proposed but is believed to not have been published yet.

Page image Volume 2 was published in 2013 and used 90 pages to detail every passenger-carrying Mk1 coach. The only photos are the 3 colour views on the covers.
Page image Dates are given (where relevant) for both withdrawal from traffic and for eventual disposal.
Page image Also included are lists of Mk1s rebuilt/renumbered for departmental use, or converted to EMUs or carflats.
Page image Not technically part of this series, Ashley also produced this summary of Mk2, 3 & 4 stock for Irwell Press in 1998.
Page image Although only 36 pages, this booklet listed all of these coaches, showing either the current operating pool or the vehicle's destiny (renumbering, scrapped, exported etc).
Page image Unlike the Coorlea titles, a number of B&W photos are included.
Page image Departmental and EMU conversions are covered.
