Note text: I always thought that the stock numbers chosen for the class 111 cars modified (with one engine removed) were somewhat arbitrary. However, there was a plan in 1982 to modify a total of 225 units (450 cars) of various classes, and the 78xxx range was perhaps chosen as it had plenty of unused numbers in it. At that time, only the 78000-78048 had been used, on class 312 EMUs. Blocks of new numbers were assigned to five different classes and cars were to be renumbered as they were modified. In the event, although most of the Rolls-Royce powered class 111 units were done, the plan for the other classes was dropped. The full list of proposed number ranges was as follows:
78501-78600 Class 101 DHCL (qty 100)
78601-78625 Class 104 DHCL (qty 25 - 1 completed as a prototype)
78626-78675 Class 108 DHCL (qty 50)
78676-78705 Class 110 DHCL (qty 30)
78706-78725 Class 111 DHCL (qty 20 - 18 completed)
78751-78850 Class 101 DHBS (qty 100)
78551-78875 Class 104 DHBS (qty 25 - 1 completed as a prototype)
78876-78925 Class 108 DHBS (qty 50)
78926-78955 Class 110 DHBS (qty 30)
78956-78975 Class 111 DHBS (qty 20 - 18 completed)
