Note added Tue 31/08/2021 by Thomas Young Category: Numbering I always thought that the stock numbers chosen for the class 111 cars modified (with one engine removed) were somewhat arbitrary. However, there was a plan in 1982 to modify a total of 225 units (450 cars) of various classes, and the 78xxx range was perhaps chosen as it had plenty of unused numbers in it. At that time, only the 78000-78048 had been used, on class 312 EMUs. Blocks of new numbers were assigned to five different classes and cars were to be renumbered as they were modified. In the event, although most of the Rolls-Royce powered class 111 units were done, the plan for the other classes was dropped.
